On the Cover
The old Eureka Mall, seen here on the cover, was built by the Ernest Pierson Company in 1966. It was Eureka’s first enclosed shopping center. Pierson acquired the West Harris Street property from the City of Eureka, demolishing the WWII-era Marine View Terrace housing to make way for construction.
In this edition, we have several articles relating to growing up, or settling, in Humboldt County. The essence of “home” can be felt across these writings. The image below evokes that concept in many of our people’s memories. Pre-Bayshore Mall kids roamed these halls, playing in the food court, waiting for their parents to clock out, and observing the koi pond. Remnants of the era remain. The photographer’s back is to the old Sears store, which is now WinCo, and facing Payless, which is now the CVS Pharmacy.
