In 1974, this was the first book published by now noted local historian, Ray Raphael. As the author says in his introduction, he is attempting to "break away from this human obsession with the extra ordinary" to not be "blinded by the light of a few special places and a few big events". In his easy-going prose, he presents the everyday life of plants and animals, fish and geology and their interaction with certain everyday people and families. He moves from the way-back to the not so long ago and gives warm life to many local characters.
This nostalgic and very perceptive read is illustrated with photographs and with copious evocative drawings by Mark Livingston. Understandably this unusual book won a lot of awards. So, pick it up, sit in the sun and plan for a pleasant afternoon or two indulging in our everyday North Coast. Your everyday life deserves it.
