A View From the Hill: A History of Humboldt State University (USED)

A View From the Hill: A History of Humboldt State University (USED)

$10.00

By William Tanner. Published in 1993, it presents the earlier history of what is now our Cal Poly Humboldt. The first chapter begins with the political effort to get a "Normal School" (teacher college) to locate in remote Humboldt County and then the squabbling between local communities over its location.

The book then goes on to relate how the institution was first located in an old grammar school building and then was given land on a hill east of town to begin building the campus we know today. Next we learn how it weathered declining enrollment during WW l, expanded curriculum, went through several more status and name changes, grew through the twenties, struggled through the Depression and then "did its part" in WW II.

Throughout the book, we are given seldom-seen photographs, plus accounts of student life, the expanding of facilities, sports activities, and reports about notable personalities. Then comes the explosion of enrollment in the post-war years, the social upheavals during the Sixties and the next status and name change to Humboldt State University. The book ends with an informative year-by-year recording of faculty, major donors, facilities, sports achievements and notable alums.  No question, A View From the Hill gives an entertaining and engrossing view of an institution that still plays a major role in our community.
